6:00 pm: Chess for All Ages!6:00 pm: Chess for All Ages! – All ages are invited to play chess this summer at the Fendrick Library at 20 N Main Street in Mercersburg. Starting this fall bring your chess set to play on Monday evenings from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Neil Coleman of Mercersburg has donated several chess sets and he will help novices of all ages learn the rules of this fascinating game. If you have a game board and pieces or chess books that are collecting dust, please donate them to the library for our friends to use. Or better yet — bring them in to play and join the fun! Chess had its beginning in India 1400 years ago and is known as the "Royal Game." The rules we play by were finalized in 1880. It has many benefits for minds of all ages. Our game evenings are great for kids and adults to put aside their blue screens on cell phones and tablets and have fun in a social setting. The game of chess improves concentration, pattern recognition, problem solving, and teaches lessons in risk and reward. Play a calculated but risky move, and it may lead to a quick win or rapid loss. Chess is recognized as an activity that can help preserve memory and cognitive skills. Chess teaches all players an important lesson: Success comes from accumulating small advantages. It's one of the secrets of life! |

All Ages: Literary Pumpkin Decorating ContestAll Ages: Literary Pumpkin Decorating Contest All Ages The Fendrick Library’s Who can enter? All Ages When do I enter? Sept. 20th – Oct. 16th What are the rules? Decorate a pumpkin or gourd When are winners announced? Monday Oct. 28th 7:00 pm: Fendrick Library Book Group7:00 pm: Fendrick Library Book Group – In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett’s intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm—the wily, charismatic Duchess and earnest, offbeat Woolly—have stowed away in the trunk of the warden’s car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett’s future, one that will take the four of them on a fateful journey in the opposite direction to the city of New York. Spanning ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles’s third novel is a multilayered tale of misadventure and self-discovery, populated by an eclectic cast of characters, from drifters who make their home riding the rails and larger-than-life vaudevillians to the aristocrats of the Upper East Side. An absorbing, exhilarating ride, The Lincoln Highway is a novel as vivid, sweeping, and moving as readers have come to expect from Towles’s work. -https://www.amortowles.com
